I was parked off Grossmont Center Drive on a Tuesday afternoon when the call came in. A 2015 MINI Convertible, top down when the key stopped responding, sitting in a lot near the Grossmont Area shopping stretch. The issue was the fob itself: the internal board had enough wear that it was sending an intermittent signal, not a clean one. The vehicle security system was rejecting it because the handshake was incomplete, not absent. That distinction matters, because an intermittent fob reads differently during diagnostics than a fully dead one.

I cut a new key blade to the vehicle, connected to the OBD port, and walked through the full programming sequence. New fob registered, old fob erased from the system. Tested every button, tested the start, confirmed the immobilizer was seeing the new key cleanly every single time.

She asked how long the dealer would have taken. I told her honestly: probably a few days once you factor in the tow, the parts order, and the service queue. She had been assuming that was her only option. It was not.
