2006 MINI Convertible
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Can you wipe out a lost or stolen key so it can't be used to start the car anymore?

Yes. When we do a security reset on these, all previously registered key data gets cleared from the vehicle's system. Only the new keys you authorize get written in. A lost fob, a stolen fob, an ex's spare, it doesn't matter. Once we do the reset and register your new key, none of the old ones will start the car or communicate with the immobilizer.

Q: Does my 2006 MINI remote head key have a hidden emergency blade inside it?

It does. The remote head key on the R52 has a fold-out or removable metal blade built into the fob body. When the battery is dead and the car won't respond to the remote, that blade is what gets you into the door physically. If your blade is worn, broken, or you have a replacement shell without one, I can cut a new blade to match your locks.

Q: My 2006 MINI starts fine but cuts out a few seconds after cranking. Is that the key or something else?

That pattern, starts and immediately stalls, points toward the immobilizer not fully validating the key. The engine management system gets a start signal but the security side isn't satisfied, so it kills fuel or ignition within seconds. It can happen when the transponder in the fob is damaged, when the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder is failing, or when the key isn't being read cleanly even though it looks fine.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my R52 MINI. Can I program it myself?

No. The remote head key on this generation needs professional diagnostic equipment to register with the immobilizer. There is no button sequence, no ignition-turn trick that handles the security side. Some forums describe a remote-only sync procedure for the lock and unlock buttons, but that is not the same as programming the transponder. The car will still refuse to start without the chip being properly enrolled. If you already bought a fob online, hang onto it.

2006 MINI Convertible Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near the waterfront in Bay Marina, National City. He had his 2006 MINI Convertible sitting in a lot and the fob had completely stopped responding. Doors wouldn't unlock remotely, car was throwing a key-not-detected warning on the cluster, and he was getting in manually through the door lock cylinder every time.

He had already bought a replacement fob online. It was sitting in a little zip-lock bag in his cupholder when I pulled up.

First thing I did was check the original fob. Popped it open on my tailgate, CR2032 was nearly dead, sitting at around 2.6 volts. Swapped in a fresh cell, cleaned the contacts, closed it back up. Walked to the car. Still no joy on the immobilizer side. The car would turn over but the security system wasn't seeing the key as valid. That told me the fob battery wasn't the only issue.

The fob he bought online was an aftermarket shell that didn't match the original configuration. I set it aside and pulled a proper blank from my inventory, cut the blade to match his door and ignition, and got the new fob programmed through the OBD port with my Autel. The whole thing took about forty minutes, most of which was the security module doing what it does at its own pace.

He dropped the top on the drive out of the lot. That was the best part of the job.

The dealer had already quoted him a number he described as "a lot." He paid a fraction of that, didn't need a tow, and didn't need to wait three days for a parts order.

MINI Convertible Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2006 MINI Convertible?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer or arrange a tow. All-keys-lost on the R52 generation means the immobilizer has to be reset and new keys registered through the OBD port. Dealers typically want the car on their lot, which means a flatbed, then a wait for parts, then labor on top.
