I got a call from a guy parked near the waterfront in Bay Marina, National City. He had his 2006 MINI Convertible sitting in a lot and the fob had completely stopped responding. Doors wouldn't unlock remotely, car was throwing a key-not-detected warning on the cluster, and he was getting in manually through the door lock cylinder every time.
He had already bought a replacement fob online. It was sitting in a little zip-lock bag in his cupholder when I pulled up.
First thing I did was check the original fob. Popped it open on my tailgate, CR2032 was nearly dead, sitting at around 2.6 volts. Swapped in a fresh cell, cleaned the contacts, closed it back up. Walked to the car. Still no joy on the immobilizer side. The car would turn over but the security system wasn't seeing the key as valid. That told me the fob battery wasn't the only issue.
The fob he bought online was an aftermarket shell that didn't match the original configuration. I set it aside and pulled a proper blank from my inventory, cut the blade to match his door and ignition, and got the new fob programmed through the OBD port with my Autel. The whole thing took about forty minutes, most of which was the security module doing what it does at its own pace.
He dropped the top on the drive out of the lot. That was the best part of the job.
The dealer had already quoted him a number he described as "a lot." He paid a fraction of that, didn't need a tow, and didn't need to wait three days for a parts order.
