I got a call out to Otay Mesa West on a Tuesday morning. The owner had a 2010 MINI Convertible and a key that had just stopped working. Not lost, just dead. She turned it in the ignition and got nothing from the remote functions. The blade still turned the cylinder, but the fob side was completely unresponsive.
She had already done the sensible thing and swapped the CR2032 herself. Still nothing. That told me before I even pulled up that this was likely a programming issue or a broken fob body, not just a battery.
When I got there, I picked up the fob and found it immediately. The hinge on the flip blade had a clean crack running across the back of the housing. It was subtle, the kind of thing you miss unless you hold it at an angle in the light. The crack had let the internal circuit board shift just enough that the key was no longer communicating reliably with the vehicle's immobilizer.
We went through it on site. New fob shell, transferred the working components, programmed everything through the OBD port, and ran through the full test: remote lock, remote unlock, all three buttons, and a confirmed engine start with the immobilizer recognizing the key.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a significant wait for a parts order plus labor on top of that. She paid a fraction of what they wanted and had a working key before noon.
