Q: What is a remote head key and how does it work on this MINI?

A remote head key is one piece that does two jobs. The blade cuts into the ignition cylinder the same as any mechanical key, but the head of the key also carries a transponder chip and the remote fob electronics. The transponder side talks to the immobilizer every time you turn the key. If the immobilizer does not recognize the chip, the engine either will not crank or it cranks and immediately dies.

Q: What if my key blade broke off inside the ignition?

That is an extraction job before anything else. The broken piece has to come out cleanly before a new key does anything useful. The concern with these MINI ignition cylinders is that a snapped blade can catch on the internal wafers on its way out, depending on the position it broke in. I assess the cylinder for damage after the piece is out. If the wafers are bent or the cylinder is sticky, that gets addressed on site.

Q: My MINI starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On these round fob bodies, the rubber button pad degrades over time and the conductive pads underneath wear out. The transponder side of the key is separate from the remote side, so the car starts fine while the buttons do nothing. A dead or weak CR2032 can also produce exactly this symptom because the fob does not have enough power to transmit even though the transponder still gets powered by the ignition circuit.

Q: The engine cranks but immediately stalls when I use my key. What is going on?

That pattern, cranks and immediately dies, points directly to the immobilizer not recognizing the key's transponder. The vehicle security system sees an unrecognized chip and cuts the engine off. It is not a mechanical problem. It usually means the key's transponder has failed, the fob body cracked and shifted the internal components, or the key was never properly enrolled to begin with. We diagnose and re-enroll the key on site through the OBD port.

I got a call out to Otay Mesa West on a Tuesday morning. The owner had a 2010 MINI Convertible and a key that had just stopped working. Not lost, just dead. She turned it in the ignition and got nothing from the remote functions. The blade still turned the cylinder, but the fob side was completely unresponsive.

She had already done the sensible thing and swapped the CR2032 herself. Still nothing. That told me before I even pulled up that this was likely a programming issue or a broken fob body, not just a battery.

When I got there, I picked up the fob and found it immediately. The hinge on the flip blade had a clean crack running across the back of the housing. Three buttons. On this key the three functions are lock, unlock, and a third button that handles the convertible top or panic depending on trim and market configuration. When we do a replacement, all three button functions get tested after programming.
