Q: What is a remote head key and what actually has to be programmed?

A remote head key is one piece that does two separate jobs. The metal blade cuts and turns the ignition the way any key does. Inside the head of the key there are two electronic systems: a transponder that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer to authorize the engine to start, and a remote transmitter that sends a radio signal to lock and unlock the doors. Both of those systems have to be registered to your specific car.

Q: Why does the dealer charge so much and take so long for a replacement key?

A few reasons. Dealers typically order the key to your VIN from their parts channel rather than stocking blanks, which adds days to the timeline before anyone even starts programming. Their labor rate and parts markup are both built into a single quoted price you do not get to separate out. And if your car is not drivable, you are also looking at a tow to get it there.

Q: My MINI Convertible starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. If the engine starts without any warning, the transponder side of the key is still talking to the immobilizer correctly. What you are dealing with is isolated to the remote transmitter. Start with the CR2032 battery, and when you open the case, check that the contacts are not bent. A slightly misaligned battery will cut the remote signal entirely while the transponder keeps working because it draws power differently.

Q: I have one working key for my 2013 MINI Convertible. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need it?

Make the spare now. With one key, you are one lost fob or one dead circuit away from an all-keys-lost situation, which takes longer and costs more than adding a second key while you still have a working one. I got a call from a guy in Downtown Lemon Grove on a Saturday afternoon. His 2013 MINI Convertible was sitting in a parking lot off Broadway and his key had just stopped working mid-day.

Not a gradual thing. He hit the lock button leaving a shop, nothing happened, got back in to drive home, and the dash threw a key warning at him. He made it home but the fob was effectively dead on the remote side and he was not sure if it would start the next morning.

He had already bought a replacement fob online before he called me. That part happens a lot. People see the fob on a parts site, it matches the button count and the shape, and they figure they are halfway there. The problem is an unprogrammed fob is just plastic and a circuit board. It does not talk to the car until it is registered through the OBD port with the right equipment.

I pulled up to his place, brought my programming system out of the van, and we did the whole job in the driveway. His existing fob had actually partially lost its programming, which is less common than a dead battery but it does happen. I registered both keys, his original and the one he bought online, tested all three buttons on each, and confirmed the immobilizer was reading both correctly before I packed up.

The dealer would have had him tow the car in, ordered the part, and called him back mid-week at best. He had two working keys before dinner.

How many buttons does the 2013 MINI Convertible remote head key have?▼

Three buttons. On this key the functions cover locking, unlocking, and a third button for the trunk release. When I program a replacement on site, I run through all three before I hand it back. A button that looks fine on the outside can have a worn contact pad underneath, and I would rather find that in your driveway than have you find it in a parking lot.
