A customer in San Luis Rey called about his 2011 MINI Convertible sitting in his driveway. He had one key and it stopped working for the remote functions, but the car still started. He had already tried a new battery, seated it correctly, and nothing changed on the lock and unlock side.
When I got there, I confirmed the transponder was still talking to the immobilizer fine because the car ran. That narrowed it down to the remote receiver side or the key itself. I cut a fresh replacement key to his vehicle, programmed it through the OBD port to register the transponder to the immobilizer and pair the remote functions, and walked every button. Lock, unlock, and the trunk release all came back clean on the new key.
He asked about the dealer. I told him they would have wanted him to tow it in, wait for a parts order, and come back another day. He had been driving around for two weeks with a half-working key because he assumed that was going to be his only option. It was not.
