2016 MINI Convertible Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a woman in Berry Park, Imperial Beach, on a Saturday afternoon. Her 2016 MINI Convertible was sitting in her driveway and the fob had stopped working almost completely. She could get in with the mechanical insert key hidden inside the fob, but the car was throwing a key-not-detected warning on the dash and would not start.
She had already bought a replacement CR2032 at the drugstore and swapped it in. No change. She figured the fob was just dead and started bracing for a dealer bill and a tow.
When I got there, the first thing I did was open the fob. The new battery was in there, but it was sitting at a slight angle and one of the contact clips had a small outward bend, probably from whoever pried it open before me. The battery was not making solid contact. I straightened the clip, reseated the battery, and snapped the cover back correctly.
She pressed the lock button standing next to the car. It beeped. She looked at me like I had done something impressive. I had not. I had just fixed a bent piece of metal.
But I stayed through the full check anyway. Every button, both doors, the convertible top button on the fob, start confirmation. Everything worked. She did not need a new fob, did not need programming, did not need a tow to the dealer. She needed someone to do the small thing correctly.
That is most of this job, honestly.
