I got a call from someone up in Crest, the quieter hillside part of El Cajon, on a Tuesday morning. She had one key for her 2002 MINI Hardtop and it had been doing something weird for a couple of weeks: the remote buttons were getting flaky, working sometimes and not others, but the car still started fine. Then one morning it stopped starting too.
She figured the key was just dead and wanted a replacement. Reasonable assumption.
I pulled up to her driveway with the MINI sitting right there on the street. Before touching anything else I popped open the fob and checked the CR2032. It read low but not completely gone. That partial voltage is the tricky zone on these, just enough power to sometimes negotiate the transponder but not reliably, and definitely not enough for consistent remote signal. The fob shell itself was in good shape, no cracked contacts, no water damage.
I cut a new key blade to the vehicle, programmed the transponder through the OBD port, synced the remote buttons, and tested every function before I put my tools away. Start, lock, unlock, all of it. Took about 35 minutes total in her driveway.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a number that made her hesitate for three days before calling me. She paid a fraction of that, never left Crest, and had a working key in her hand before lunch.
