I got a call from someone parked near the water in Bay Marina. She had a 2016 MINI Hardtop and a fob that had stopped cooperating. She could still get in with the emergency key blade, but the car was throwing a key-not-detected warning every time she tried to start it, and she had to hold the fob against the start button just to get it to turn over. That workaround had worked for about a week. Then it stopped working entirely.
She had already tried a new CR2032. At a drugstore, she said, because she looked it up and knew that was the right battery. Smart. But the problem stayed.
I got there, pulled the fob apart, and the battery contact had a slight outward bow to it. Looked like the old battery had been pried out instead of popped. The new battery wasn't making clean contact even though it looked seated. I straightened the clip, cleaned the contact points, and reseated the CR2032. Just to be thorough, I checked the fob's signal before calling it done.
Car recognized it immediately. No warning on the dash. Start button worked normally. She just needed that contact fixed.
The whole thing took maybe twenty minutes parked right where she was. She mentioned she had been about to call the dealer. I don't know what they would have quoted her to start digging into it, but it wasn't going to be cheap or fast.
