I got a call out to Rancho Del Oro on a Tuesday afternoon. The owner had a 2017 MINI Hardtop sitting in the driveway, going nowhere. She had one fob, it had gotten wet, and now the car just showed a key-not-detected warning every time she walked up to the door handle.
She had already done the right thing: pulled the battery out, let it dry, fresh CR2032 in. Still nothing. The fob was done.

The car recognized it that way, which told me the transponder side of the old fob was still partially alive but the wireless side was gone. That is actually useful information because it means the immobilizer registration was intact. We were not dealing with all-keys-lost, just a fob replacement.
Cut the new blade to her vehicle on site, connected to the OBD port, enrolled the new fob into the system. Tested Comfort Access on both doors, tested the start, walked every button. The whole thing took about 40 minutes including the diagnostics.
She asked about the dealer almost as an aside, like she already knew the answer. I told her they would have needed an appointment, probably a parts order, and at least a few days. She nodded and went back inside. Job done.
