I got a call from a guy in the Live Oak Park Area of Fallbrook on a Saturday afternoon. His 2011 MINI Hardtop had been throwing a key warning on and off for about a week, and that morning it stopped starting altogether. He had already tried a new CR2032. Still nothing.
When I pulled up, he was standing next to the car looking like he had already mentally prepared to deal with a dealer on Monday. He mentioned someone at a parts store told him the immobilizer module might be bad. That sent him down a rabbit hole online over the weekend.

Cleaned those up, reseated everything, and retested. The remote functions came back. But the car still would not start, which told me the transponder side had lost its pairing, likely from running on a failing connection long enough to cause a dropout.
Hooked up through the OBD port, confirmed the key was no longer recognized by the vehicle security system, and ran the programming sequence to re-enroll it. The whole thing took about 35 minutes from the time I opened the van doors.
He had been planning to tow it to the dealer Monday and take whatever timeline they gave him. He did not have to do any of that.
