Got a call from someone parked near the Spring Valley border side of Lemon Grove, outside a coffee spot on a Tuesday afternoon. The 2015 MINI Hardtop would not acknowledge the fob at all. No lock, no unlock, and when they got in with the emergency blade the dash lit up with a key-not-detected warning and the car sat there.
They had already done the thing everyone does: bought a CR2032 at a nearby pharmacy and swapped it in the parking lot. Still nothing. So now they were convinced they needed a whole new fob and were already dreading the MINI dealer.
When I got there I pulled the fob apart first thing. The new battery was in correctly, contacts looked fine. The issue was the fob itself had stopped communicating with the vehicle -- it needed to be re-paired through the OBD port, which is exactly what the F56 platform requires when a fob loses its registration.
Hooked up the diagnostic equipment, walked through the pairing procedure, and tested every function: lock, unlock, the remaining buttons, and confirmed the dash warning was gone. Start and shut down a couple times to make sure it was holding. It was.
The whole job was done in the parking lot, which is exactly where they needed it. They had looked up what the dealer would run, and what I charged was a fraction of that. They seemed more surprised by the location than anything else -- most people do not expect a full key service to happen in a coffee shop parking lot in Lemon Grove.
