I was parked on Palm Avenue, just past the boat launch in Bayside, when I got a call about a 2012 MINI Hardtop. The owner had one key, a remote head key, and it had stopped locking and unlocking the doors remotely. The blade still turned the ignition and the car still started, so she had been living with it for a few weeks, just using the key manually in the door.
She figured it was a battery. She was right about that, partly. The CR2032 was almost flat, but when I put a fresh one in and tested it, the remote still would not talk to the car. The battery being low for that long had created a secondary problem: the fob had lost sync with the receiver.
On this generation MINI, losing sync is not unusual after a battery fully dies or gets swapped out without following the right steps. The fix is a resync, which takes a couple of minutes once you know the sequence. I ran it, walked the car, tested all three buttons, checked the lock, the unlock, and the other function. Everything came back clean.
She had been planning to take it to the dealer, had already looked up the appointment availability. They were booking out over a week. She was genuinely surprised the whole thing was done while she was standing there watching the water.
