2005 MINI Hardtop 2 Door Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy in Bonsall called me on a Tuesday morning. He had one key for his 2005 MINI Hardtop and it had been getting flaky for weeks. Buttons sometimes worked, sometimes didn't. He'd been living with it, locking the car manually each time. Then the key stopped starting the car entirely and that changed the math fast.
He'd already called the dealer. The quote he got back made him pause long enough to start searching for other options.
When I pulled up, he met me at the curb. The key looked fine on the outside, no cracks, nothing obviously wrong. I checked the battery first. The CR2032 had just enough voltage to look alive on a meter but wasn't delivering clean power under load. Swapped it, re-synced the remote side, and then enrolled the transponder to the immobilizer through the diagnostic port. Both sides confirmed working.
I walked him through locking, unlocking, and two cold starts before I packed up. The whole thing happened in his driveway. He mentioned the dealer quote almost as an aside at the end. He'd saved a good chunk and never needed a tow.
That's most of these calls. One key, no spare, someone who waited a little too long on a warning sign.
