2003 MINI Hardtop 2 Door
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2003 MINI Hardtop 2 Door Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, parked in his driveway off San Elijo, holding a 2003 MINI Hardtop with a key that had seen better days. The blade was worn, the fob shell was cracked, and he'd been nursing it for months.

Then one morning the car just wouldn't start. Not a dead battery. Not a bad starter. The engine would crank, catch for a second, and die. Classic immobilizer behavior.

He'd already called the dealer in the area and heard back a timeline that stretched into the following week, plus a number that made him set the phone down quietly.

I pulled up with everything I needed. First thing I did was look at the wiring around the ignition, because on these early MINIs, bypasses happen. His was clean, which was good news. The issue was the key itself. Years of wear had taken a toll on the transponder side of things, and the immobilizer had finally stopped trusting it.

I cut a fresh blade to match his locks, programmed the transponder so the immobilizer would recognize it, then paired the remote functions and tested the whole thing. Lock, unlock, start. All of it, right there in the driveway.

He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted him, and he didn't have to arrange a ride or wait a week. Thirty minutes in Cardiff-by-the-Sea and he was back on the road.
