I got a call from someone near Kit Carson Park in Escondido. She had a 2004 MINI Hardtop sitting in her driveway, and her only key had stopped doing anything remotely useful. The fob buttons were dead, and she was hand-jamming the door lock every time she needed to get in. When I got there I popped the fob open first. The CR2032 inside was completely shot, reading almost nothing on the meter. A dead fob battery on this generation won't cause a no-start by itself because the transponder side gets its signal differently than the remote functions. But I tested the transponder anyway, walked through the programming, and confirmed it was reading clean. The hesitation was likely something else entirely, not the key system at all.
I walked her through what both sides of that key actually do, because most owners of this car treat it like one thing. She had no idea the remote and the transponder were separate functions in the same unit. By the time I left, both were confirmed working, and she wasn't white-knuckling the door handle anymore.
