Out near the truck stops off the edge of Otay Mesa, a long-haul driver called me from a parking lot. He was running a tight schedule and his 370Z key blade had snapped. Not cracked, not bent - clean break, with half the blade still sitting in the door lock cylinder.
He had already called another locksmith who told him the cylinder needed to be drilled and replaced. New cylinder, new keys, the whole thing. He called me for a second opinion before agreeing to it.
I drove out and took a look. The fragment was seated cleanly inside the cylinder with no deformation to the wafer surfaces. I worked the broken piece out with extraction tools, no scratching, no forced entry. Once it was out, I decoded the lock by reading the wafer positions directly and cut a new blade to match.
The 370Z on a push-button start system means the fob itself handles the immobilizer communication, not the blade. So once the new blade was cut, we confirmed the existing fob was reading correctly at the ignition and did a function check on all four buttons.
His cylinder was untouched. His lock worked. He was back on the road in under an hour. The other locksmith's plan would have cost him a lot more time and a lot more money, and he would have driven away with a brand-new cylinder that matched nothing else on the car.
He did not say much when it was done. He just looked at the key, looked at the door, unlocked it twice, and got in. That reaction tells me everything I need to know.
