I got a call from a guy parked in the Seacoast neighborhood of Imperial Beach, right off the waterfront. He owned a 2018 370Z in a really clean black-on-black setup, and he had already replaced the CR2032 himself. Twice. Different brands. The car was still throwing a key-not-detected warning intermittently, and twice in the past week it had refused to start entirely before eventually cooperating.
He had called the Nissan dealer first. They told him to bring the car in, that they would need to run a diagnostic session before they could even quote the repair, and that if a new fob was needed it would be a scheduled programming appointment. He was looking at a tow, a diagnostic fee, and an open-ended wait.
I pulled up to him in the lot. He was leaning on the driver door with his arms crossed, clearly done with the whole situation.
I checked the fob internals first. The battery contact on one side had a slight outward bow, not making solid contact even with a fresh CR2032. That was almost certainly the culprit for the inconsistent readings. Straightened the contact, seated the battery correctly, cleaned the board terminals.
Then I ran the programming side anyway to verify the fob's registration to the immobilizer was clean, because intermittent no-start on a 370Z can also be the fob's enrollment getting corrupted, and I wanted to know for certain before I handed it back. Everything checked out. The fob was reading strong on all functions.
He started the car three times in a row standing outside the door, just to watch it work. Then he laughed a little, the way people do when the fix turns out to be smaller than the anxiety it caused.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer was pointing toward, and he never had to leave Seacoast.
