I got a call from a guy parked near the Casa de Oro side of La Mesa on a weekday afternoon. He owned a 2017 370Z, had both keys with him, and neither one was starting the car. Dashboard was showing a key-not-detected warning even with the fob sitting right on the center console.
He had already done the obvious thing and put a fresh battery in the fob. Still nothing.
I pulled up and the first thing I did was check the second fob. Same result. When both keys fail at the same time, the fob is almost never the problem. That points somewhere else entirely, usually the antenna that reads the fob, or a power issue upstream of the immobilizer. I ran a quick scan and found a stored fault in the vehicle security system, no communication with the Intelligent Key receiver. Traced it to a fuse that had given up quietly, probably a while back, and a corroded ground that had been marginal for longer than that.
Cleaned the ground, swapped the fuse, and both original fobs came back immediately. No new key needed, no programming, no tow.
He had already called the dealer before he found me. They wanted the car towed in and had an appointment two days out. He saved a good chunk just by not doing that, and he had his car back in about an hour.
The 370Z is a sports car that gets pushed hard sometimes, and electrical grounds take a beating over time. When both keys fail together, start there before assuming anything is wrong with the keys themselves.
