A guy in the Santee Lakes Area flagged me down in a Home Depot lot on his lunch break. He had a 2010 Corolla and a fob that had stopped doing much of anything. He'd read a forum post from years back saying Toyota programming was strictly a dealer job, and the dealer's website did nothing to talk him out of that idea.
He wasn't wrong that dealers can do it. He was just wrong that they're the only ones who can.
I checked the fob first. CR1632 seated correctly, contacts looked fine. The issue wasn't the battery. The fob needed to be registered to the car's immobilizer. I connected through the OBD port under the dash, pulled up the key registration sequence on my diagnostic unit, and walked through the enrollment. The car's security system confirmed the new pairing. Lock, unlock, and ignition response all tested clean before I closed anything up.
The whole thing happened in the same parking spot where he'd been standing, stressing, on his phone looking up dealer wait times.
He mentioned the dealer wanted an appointment the following week and quoted him a price that made the drive across town feel very optional. He paid a fraction of that and still made it back before his lunch break ran out.
The car doesn't know or care where the key got programmed. It just checks whether the fob is enrolled. That part I can do on site.
