A guy near Lake Poway Area had been driving his 2017 Corolla for a week with a sticky backup plan. His smart fob had gotten flaky, he had the metal insert key as a fallback, and he was living with it. His plan was to eventually deal with it, which meant eventually had arrived when he texted me from the Home Depot parking lot on a Tuesday.

He had the fob with him, and before I touched the programming tools, I did the simple thing first: opened the fob, checked the CR1632, reseated it properly. Still flaky. The contact clip had a slight bend, probably from a previous battery swap done with the wrong tool. Straightened it out, clean contact, fresh cell seated correctly.
That alone fixed about half his problem. Range came back. Touch-unlock on the driver door started responding again.
The fob he had was still the original, so no programming job was needed that day, just the mechanical fix and a full function test. Lock, unlock, touch entry, every button. All confirmed before I closed it back up.
He had blocked out two hours for a dealer appointment he had not made yet. He was back inside buying whatever he came for in under thirty minutes. The car never left the spot.
