I was already in Downtown Oceanside when the call came in. Guy at a parking structure off Coast Highway, 2019 Corolla, said his fob stopped working overnight and he was already late getting somewhere.
When I got there he handed me the fob and told me he had already swapped the battery. I asked him what battery he put in. He pulled out the packaging. CR2032. Wrong size for that fob. It had been sitting in there making just enough contact to power the fob intermittently, which is almost worse than no contact at all because it makes the fault look random.
I popped it open, seated the correct CR1632, cleaned the contact plate, and closed it back up. Tested every function. Lock, unlock, the panic button, all four buttons. Then I walked the door handles to check the touch-unlock sensors on both sides, because if you are going to be there anyway you check the whole system, not just the thing the owner pointed at.
Everything came back clean. The fob had been fine the whole time.
He mentioned he had almost called the dealer that morning. I did not push on it. He already knew what the dealer visit would have looked like: schedule an appointment, wait a few days, get quoted for a new fob they would order and program. This took about fifteen minutes on site.
