Out by Bay Marina in National City, a guy flagged me down after calling the number off my van. His 2026 Corolla fob had been acting up for a week, and that morning the car just sat there. He pushed the start button and got a key-not-detected warning every time.
He had already swapped the battery. He told me that twice before I could even ask.
I pulled the fob apart right on the hood of my van. The battery was a CR2450, correct size, but the contact plate had a slight upward bow in it, probably from the original battery being pried out with something too thick. The new battery was making contact on one side and floating on the other. Less than a minute with a small flathead to reset the contact, cleaned the terminals, seated the battery correctly.
We walked the car together. Touch sensors on both door handles responding, start button reading the fob from inside, all four buttons confirmed. The car behaved like nothing had ever happened.
He had already called the dealer before he called me. They told him to bring it in and plan on leaving it. I was done before he would have even made it to the service lane.
