Out in San Diego Country Estates, the roads that wind through the back of Ramona don't get a lot of foot traffic. Someone loses a key out there, there's no corner locksmith, no dealership around the bend. It's just distance and scrub oak.

A guy out there had his 2016 Corolla sitting in the driveway of a property he was watching. One key. He'd been putting off the spare for a while, the way most people do, and then the fob went through the wash in his shirt pocket. It powered on after drying out, sort of. The door handles would respond maybe one out of three tries. The dash threw a key-not-detected warning half the time he sat down. He wasn't locked out, but he was close enough to nervous.

First thing I did was open the fob and check the battery and contacts. The CR1632 had survived the wash but the contacts had a faint film on them. Cleaned everything, seated a fresh battery, and tested. Still inconsistent. The wash had gotten into the board.

That moved it from a battery call to a replacement fob job. I built a new smart key on site, registered it to the immobilizer using my diagnostic equipment, cut the blade, and verified every function at the car before I packed up. Doors, start, the full check.

He asked about the dealer. I told him the wait alone would have taken most of a day, plus the tow if the car had stopped starting entirely. He'd driven it there. That was lucky timing.
