A woman up in Mt. Helix had been nursing a failing flip key on her 2005 S60 for a couple of months. The blade would pop out, she'd turn the ignition, and sometimes the car would start. Sometimes it wouldn't. She described it as a coin flip, which is exactly the kind of intermittent fault that makes people doubt everything at once.
She'd called a Volvo dealer first. They told her the car had to come in, quoted her a number she didn't love, and said key turnaround would take a few days because of parts ordering. Her car was sitting in her driveway running maybe half the time. Towing it to a dealer felt like the wrong move when the problem wasn't consistent.

I pulled up to her place on a Tuesday morning. She met me at the car with the key already out and a look like she'd already accepted this was going to be expensive and slow. I told her let's figure out what we're actually dealing with before we assume anything.
Tested the existing key first. The transponder chip was reading fine. The remote functions were weak but present. What she had was a worn blade that was making inconsistent contact in the ignition cylinder, combined with a battery that was almost done. Not a programming failure. Not a module problem.
I cut a fresh blade to her vehicle, transferred the remote and chip assembly, seated a new CR2032 with proper contact pressure, and programmed everything at the car. Tested the start three times, walked all five buttons, confirmed the remote range was back.
She said she'd been dreading this for weeks. Took about 35 minutes parked in her own driveway, for a fraction of what the dealer had in mind. That part she appreciated, but the bigger thing was not having to arrange a tow for a car that was, technically, still starting half the time.
