A customer at his brother's house in Ventura asked me directly whether his spare would hold up as a daily key. He had a 2011 BMW X5 and wanted something he could carry every day, not a backup in a drawer. Fair question, and it deserves an honest answer.
OEM BMW fobs come from the factory supplier with the roundel on the housing and a significant brand markup. Aftermarket smart keys use the same blade profile, same chip spec, same button layout, and the same circuit board design. The functional difference in daily use is zero if the aftermarket blank is properly sourced.
I carry aftermarket blanks tested across hundreds of BMW jobs. The blade is the same HU92 laser-cut profile. The chip matches the FEM module's encryption spec. His fob, FCC ID , was a -button smart key, and the aftermarket housing has the same button feel, same weight, same fit. The only visible difference is no BMW roundel on the back and roughly $150 less in his pocket.
His total was 95. Dealer charges 200 for the OEM version. Where aftermarket can go wrong is cheap sourcing. Thin shells, wrong chip, bad button pads. I test every batch before it goes in the van. If the shells crack or the chips don't match, I send the whole lot back.
