I was parked at a spot near the trailhead off Sunset Hills in Lang Ranch when the call came in. Woman staying at a place in Thousand Oaks for a guest lecture. Her only key. She'd slipped on wet pavement walking to the car that evening, the fob hit the ground hard, and after that it gave her a key-not-detected warning every time she got near the door handle. The start button would flash and do nothing.
She'd already called the Jaguar dealer. They wanted her to tow it in, said they could look at it in two days minimum. She had a lecture the next morning and a flight that night. Two days wasn't a conversation she could have.
I drove over to where she was. The fob casing had a hairline crack along the seam and when I opened it up, one of the battery contacts had sprung slightly outward from the impact. The CR2032 wasn't making solid contact anymore. I straightened the contact, seated a fresh cell, and closed it back up.
That fixed the key-not-detected warning and got the handles waking up again, but I still walked all five buttons, tested the door handles on both sides, and confirmed the start button was reading the fob cleanly before I called it done. No programming needed this time. The fob was fine, just rattled by a fall.
She made her lecture. She made her flight. The dealer quote never came back up because it was already irrelevant by the time she was back in the driver's seat.
