2017 Jaguar XE
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my XE to the dealer for key replacement?

No. This is one of the things dealers count on you not knowing. A mobile locksmith with the right JLR tooling can handle fob programming through the OBD port at the vehicle, right where it sits. No tow, no drop-off, no waiting on parts to arrive at the service department. Dealer timelines on all-keys-lost jobs for the XE tend to stretch across multiple days once you factor in the appointment, the parts order, and the actual bench time.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle before you'll make a key?

Valid photo ID and proof of ownership. Registration or title works. I also pull the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker and verify it matches your paperwork before any work starts. Same standard a dealer holds you to, done on site in a few minutes instead of at a service counter.

Q: My XE shows a key warning on the dash but the car still starts. Should I be worried?

Yes, take it seriously. An intermittent key-not-detected warning that still lets the car start is an early sign, not a pass. On the 2017 XE, that warning pattern often traces back to one of three things: a CR2032 that's losing voltage but hasn't fully quit, a contact issue inside the fob from a drop or old wear, or a 12V auxiliary battery that's dragging down the module's ability to communicate with the fob reliably.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2017 XE. Can I program it myself?

No. The XE smart key requires professional diagnostic equipment to register with the vehicle. There is no button sequence or ignition-cycle trick that works on this system. The fob you bought will physically open and close, but it will not start the car or trigger the door handles until it has been paired through the OBD port by someone with JLR-compatible software. The good news is you already have the fob, which is usually the expensive part.

2017 Jaguar XE Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked at a spot near the trailhead off Sunset Hills in Lang Ranch when the call came in. Woman staying at a place in Thousand Oaks for a guest lecture.

Her only key. She'd slipped on wet pavement walking to the car that evening, the fob hit the ground hard, and after that it gave her a key-not-detected warning every time she got near the door handle. The start button would flash and do nothing.

She'd already called the Jaguar dealer. They wanted her to tow it in, said they could look at it in two days minimum. She had a lecture the next morning and a flight that night. Two days wasn't a conversation she could have.

I drove over to where she was. The fob casing had a hairline crack along the seam and when I opened it up, one of the battery contacts had sprung slightly outward from the impact. The CR2032 wasn't making solid contact anymore. I straightened the contact, seated a fresh cell, and closed it back up.

That fixed the key-not-detected warning and got the handles waking up again, but I still walked all five buttons, tested the door handles on both sides, and confirmed the start button was reading the fob cleanly before I called it done. No programming needed this time. The fob was fine, just rattled by a fall.

She made her lecture. She made her flight. The dealer quote never came back up because it was already irrelevant by the time she was back in the driver's seat.

Jaguar XE Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. If you're in Thousand Oaks or the Lang Ranch area, I come to you. I carry JLR-capable programming equipment, key blanks, and everything needed to handle the 2017 XE on site. You don't need a tow truck and you don't need to figure out how to get a keyless car to a dealer without a working key. All-keys-lost on the XE requires diagnostic equipment to communicate with the keyless vehicle module and register a new fob.
