Got a call from a guy near the Madera Road shopping area in Simi Valley. His 2014 GLK350 had one key left and it was acting up. Buttons would work from two feet away but nothing from across the parking lot. He figured the battery was dying, swapped the CR2025 himself, same problem.
When I got there he had the fob sitting on a napkin on his hood. He'd already pried it open to change the battery and I could see why the range dropped. The battery clip on the negative side had a slight bend from being levered with a screwdriver, and there was a faint green film starting on one of the solder points near the NEC chip on the board. Not dead yet, but headed there.
Cleaned the contact points, straightened the clip so the CR2025 seated flat, and sealed it back up. Full button test from 30 feet, then 50. Locks, unlock, trunk, panic. All four responded clean.
He had also been putting off getting a spare made. So I cut a new IYZ-3312 blank on the HU64 keyway right there, programmed it to an open slot on his EIS through the OBD port, and tested both keys back to back. Two working keys, one visit, no appointment, and he was back in his afternoon before the parking lot got busy.
Dealer would have had him drop the car off and wait days for a factory-order key from Germany. He kept both fobs in his hand like he didn't trust the situation yet.
