Got a call one evening from someone near La Cumbre Plaza in Santa Barbara. She was a visiting professor, in town for the semester, staying at a rental off the main road. Her only key for a 2009 Rabbit had stopped working. Remote was dead, and the immobilizer light on the dash was flashing steady, which on these MK5 platform cars means the instrument cluster isn't seeing the transponder.
She'd already called the VW dealer. They told her to have it towed in, they could look at it the next afternoon, and the key would need to be ordered. That is a lot of waiting when you're new to a city and have nowhere to go.
I drove out that same night. Pulled into the rental driveway and got set up on the hood. The 2009 Rabbit uses the Megamos 48 crypto chip on the CAN immobilizer system, module address 25 in the instrument cluster. I connected through OBD, read the immobilizer data with my VVDI2, generated a new Megamos 48 transponder value, cut the HU66 blade on my mobile machine, and programmed the new 1K0959753P flip key to the car.
Whole thing took about 35 minutes. She turned the key, immobilizer light went out, engine started clean.
She drove to campus the next morning with two working keys. She said she'd been dreading the idea of being stuck in a city she barely knew. That part stuck with me more than the job itself.
