1996 Acura RL Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out near the Border Area in San Ysidro, I got a call from a guy who thought his 1996 Acura RL was haunted. The car started fine every morning, no issue there.
But the remote had completely stopped responding, and when he finally cracked the fob open to check, half the internal contacts had corroded. He said the fob had been sitting in a cupholder for years with a slow condensation problem. The battery looked fine. The board did not.
I pulled up to his spot with a replacement fob matched to the factory FCC ID for his car. The 1996 RL remote system is older technology, which actually works in the owner's favor in one specific way: the sync process does not require a dealership diagnostic system. There is an onboard procedure using the ignition that locks in the new remote. I walked through the sequence, confirmed all four buttons were registering, and tested lock, unlock, and the trunk release at the car.
The whole thing took about 25 minutes from the time I arrived. He had been putting it off for two weeks because he assumed it meant a dealer trip and a long wait. It did not.
