One thing worth knowing about the RL: the key housing on these remote head keys takes a lot of daily stress because the blade and the remote body are all one unit. The pivot points and the shell itself can crack over time, especially if the key has been on a heavy ring for years. If the shell is cracked but the internal board is still good, I can sometimes transplant the electronics into a new housing instead of rebuilding everything from scratch. If the board is damaged too, we go full replacement and program on site.

If the car cranks but immediately stalls, that's the immobilizer not recognizing the chip, which means the key's transponder data may have been lost or corrupted. If the key doesn't turn at all, that's a mechanical issue with the cylinder, not the chip.

Forum threads on the RL generation consistently point to two failure modes: the transponder chip losing its registration over time, and internal board corrosion, especially on keys that have been exposed to moisture. There's no button trick, no sequence in the owner's manual that does this.

The key you bought online is likely a valid blank, and that's fine. It just needs to be cut to your vehicle and programmed through the diagnostic port. Bring it when you call, and I can usually use a customer-supplied blank if it's the correct type.

Can you make a key for my RL if I have no working keys at all?

Yes. All-keys-lost on the 2012 RL is a job I handle on site. It takes longer than adding a spare because the immobilizer has to be reset before new keys can be registered, and that reset process has a timed sequence built in. Plan for the job to take more time than a standard second-key add.

Proof of ownership is required before I start, no exceptions. I verify that on every all-keys-lost job regardless of vehicle or location. Once that's done, I cut and program at least one working key before I leave, and I'd strongly recommend doing two at the same time while the system is already open. Having a single key on a vehicle this age is how people end up in the same situation twice.
