Up near the Torrey Pines area of Del Mar, I got a call from a guy who had snapped his key off in the ignition cylinder of his 2005 Acura RL. Not bent, not lost. Snapped, with the tip still seated in the cylinder.
He had tried to work it out with a magnet and a pair of tweezers before calling me. The tweezers just pushed it deeper.
I extracted the broken tip with a pick set, took my time so the cylinder pins didn't take any damage in the process. Once it was clear, I decoded the cuts from the cylinder itself and cut a fresh key blade on site. Tested it in the ignition, tested it in both door locks.
Total time at the car was about 35 minutes. He mentioned the dealer had told him on the phone they would need the car brought in, the cylinder might need to be replaced, and the wait was several days out. He did not end up needing a new cylinder, and he did not need a tow. The key was the only thing broken.
