2005 Acura RL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Does my 2005 Acura RL really need to go to the dealer for a replacement key?

No. The 2005 RL uses a mechanical key, which means replacement is a cutting job, nothing more. The dealer route typically means towing the car in, waiting for parts, and paying for labor rates that reflect their overhead. A mobile locksmith handles it in your driveway in Torrey Pines for a fraction of what they wanted. No tow, no wait, no appointment. If you have a spare that works, I can duplicate it right there.

Q: What do I need to show to prove ownership before you cut a key?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. I confirm the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker on your RL and match it to your paperwork before I cut anything. Same standard a dealer would follow, done on site in minutes instead of at a parts counter with a multi-day wait. That verification step protects you as much as it does me.

Q: My 2005 RL key turns hard and sometimes does not want to come out of the ignition. Is that a key problem or a cylinder problem?

After 20 years, this is almost always the cylinder. The RL's ignition cylinder and door lock cylinders can develop wear, corrosion, or debris buildup that makes a correctly cut key feel stiff or sticky. A worn key can also accelerate cylinder wear, so if your key looks chewed up at the cuts, that contributes too. First step is to try the key in the door lock and see if it behaves the same way.

Q: I found a spare key in a drawer but I am not sure it will start the car. How do I know if it is the right key?

Try it in the door lock first. If it turns the lock, the cuts are correct. Then try the ignition. On the 2005 RL with a mechanical key, if the cuts work, the car starts. There is no pairing or registration step to worry about. If it turns in the door but does not turn in the ignition, the ignition cylinder may have worn differently than the door cylinder over the years, which happens.

2005 Acura RL Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Up near the Torrey Pines area of Del Mar, I got a call from a guy who had snapped his key off in the ignition cylinder of his 2005 Acura RL. Not bent, not lost. Snapped, with the tip still seated in the cylinder.

He had tried to work it out with a magnet and a pair of tweezers before calling me. The tweezers just pushed it deeper.

I extracted the broken tip with a pick set, took my time so the cylinder pins didn't take any damage in the process. Once it was clear, I decoded the cuts from the cylinder itself and cut a fresh key blade on site. Tested it in the ignition, tested it in both door locks.

Total time at the car was about 35 minutes. He mentioned the dealer had told him on the phone they would need the car brought in, the cylinder might need to be replaced, and the wait was several days out. He did not end up needing a new cylinder, and he did not need a tow. The key was the only thing broken.

Acura RL Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out and have no spare. Can you come to me in Torrey Pines?▼

Yes. I come to you. If you are near Torrey Pines or anywhere in Del Mar, I bring the decoding tools and key blanks for your 2005 Acura RL and cut a working key on site. The RL uses a mechanical key, so there is no programming step and no reason to tow the car anywhere. I can get into the vehicle and have a cut key in your hand in one visit.
