2003 Acura RL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will the replacement key last?

As long as you treat it like a key and not a stress toy, it should outlast your ownership of the car. The programming does not wear out. The transponder either talks to the immobilizer or it does not, and a properly enrolled key keeps working. What does wear is the physical shell. Remote-head keys from this era take a beating in pockets and on keyrings, and the plastic housing can eventually crack.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me. That is what the warranty is for. If the key loses remote function, throws a key-not-detected warning, or stops starting the car, I come back and sort it out. I test every key before I leave the job, but if something surfaces after, it gets covered. That protection disappears when you buy a key online and figure out the programming yourself, or hand it to someone who does not stand behind their work.

Q: I only have one key for my 2003 Acura RL. Should I get a spare before something goes wrong?

Yes, and the time to do it is when you still have a working key. Adding a second key while the original is in hand is the easiest version of this job. I can read what I need from the vehicle, cut and program the spare, and have you walking away with two working keys. Once that original is lost or damaged, the job becomes an all-keys-lost scenario, which takes longer and costs more.

Q: My 2003 RL starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. Start with the CR2025. A dead or weak battery is the most common reason the remote stops responding while the ignition still works fine, because the transponder chip draws almost no power but the remote transmitter needs a solid charge to reach the receiver. Pop the battery, put in a fresh CR2025, and retest all four buttons.

2003 Acura RL Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A detailer over near Moonlight Beach in Encinitas called me in a mild panic. He had a customer's 2003 Acura RL on his lot for a full detail, and somewhere during the job the only key had slipped behind a piece of equipment. He had two hours before the customer showed up, and the car was sitting in a spot he needed to clear.

He did not want to explain to the customer why their RL was stuck.

I got there with the tools to decode the lock mechanically and generate a replacement key from scratch. The 2003 RL takes a remote-head key, four buttons, CR2025 battery. I cut the blade to fit the lock, programmed the transponder to pair with the immobilizer, and verified the remote functions. The car started and moved in under 30 minutes from when I arrived.

He found the original key later that afternoon wedged behind a shelf. His customer came, picked up the car, and never knew any of this happened. The detailer now has my number saved under "key guy."

For these early 2000s Acura remote-head models, it is genuinely one of the faster jobs in my rotation. The dealer would have meant a tow, an appointment, and a wait measured in days, not minutes.

Acura RL Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on a 2003 Acura RL?▼

We match the correct key blank, transponder chip, and remote frequency to your specific vehicle before we roll out. For a 2003 RL, that means verifying the blade profile fits your ignition and door locks, that the transponder pairs correctly with the immobilizer, and that the remote operates on the right frequency. Whether the shell is OEM-sourced or high-quality aftermarket, the functional spec has to match.
