The battery contacts inside the fob develop a thin oxide layer that breaks the connection even when the battery tests okay on a meter. And on a 20-plus-year-old fob, the circuit board solder joints can develop micro-cracks from years of temperature swings and pocket impact.

Start with a fresh CR2032 and clean the contact points before assuming the fob is dead. If a new battery and clean contacts don't bring it back, the fob itself has probably reached end of life, and a replacement remote programmed to your car is the next step. That's a routine job on this vehicle.

Can I program a second remote myself at home for the 2000 RL?
