Out near the CSUSM Area, I got a call from an older gentleman who lived in a senior community just off the main road. He had a 1997 Acura RL and he wasn't driving it much, mostly just to medical appointments when he needed to get somewhere his daughter couldn't take him. That week she was out of town.
His remote-head key had stopped unlocking the doors reliably, and the blade was starting to feel stiff in the ignition. He mentioned it had been that way for a while, but he kept hoping it would sort itself out. It didn't.
Getting to a dealership wasn't a small thing for him. He uses a cane, he doesn't have a second car, and the nearest Acura dealer is a real drive from where he lives. He found me and asked if I could just come to him. That's exactly what I do.
I met him in the parking lot of his building that morning. The blade side of the job was first: I decoded the lock mechanically, confirmed the cut, and made a fresh blade. That addressed the stiff ignition, which on a car this age is usually worn tumblers meeting a worn key, and a fresh cut fixes it cleanly.
Then the remote side. The 1997 RL uses the factory fob with the dealer part number on it, a 4-button unit running a CR2032. I programmed the transponder through the OBD port and paired the remote at the same time. Tested every button, tested the start, walked around the car. Everything worked.
He asked me to show him how to check the battery himself so he'd catch it before it became a problem again. I did. Took about two minutes.
He never had to leave his building. The dealer, when he'd called them earlier in the week, wanted him to bring the car in and quoted him significantly more than what he paid me, for one key, with no mention of how he was supposed to get there in the first place. He got two keys and didn't have to figure out a ride.
