1998 Acura RL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

1998 Acura RL Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

An IT director at a corporate campus in Kearny Mesa, San Diego, ran his Acura RL remote through the washing machine on a Sunday night. By Monday morning it was in a bag of rice. By Tuesday morning he knew the rice wasn't going to save it.

He was in back-to-back meetings from eight in the morning until four in the afternoon. He couldn't leave the building, couldn't arrange a tow during business hours, and couldn't wait until the weekend because the car was his only way home. He found me through a search and texted between meetings asking if I could come to the parking lot.

I got there during his eleven o'clock break. He met me at the car, handed me what was left of the old fob, and went back inside. I plugged into the OBD port, checked which keys were registered to the vehicle, confirmed the washed fob was dead but still in memory, and added a new remote as an additional key. Tested all four buttons. Verified the car started and idled normally. Done before his next meeting.

When he came out I had two working fobs on his center console. He asked about the dead one. I told him to keep it in the rice another day, but not to count on it reviving. He nodded, took both fobs, and walked back in.

The dealer route for this would have meant scheduling days out, figuring out a tow, and sitting in a waiting room for the better part of a morning. His car never left the parking spot.
