A personal trainer at the gym parking lot in Fallbrook had exactly that story. His only key to his 2001 Acura RL cracked at the fob housing and the emergency blade snapped when he tried to use it to open the door manually. I used my VVDI Key Tool to generate a fresh transponder chip while I decoded the door lock with my Lishi. Because his old fob's circuit board was still intact inside the cracked housing, I was able to read the chip data and avoid a full all-keys-lost reset, which saved time and money. His fob, FCC ID CWT72147KA, was a 4-button smart key that I rebuilt into a new housing with fresh electronics and a new emergency blade. I showed him the chip from the cracked fob so he could see it was still good.
He went from zero working keys to two in about 40 minutes. Total was around $113. A full all-keys-lost without any salvageable pieces would have cost more, and the dealer wanted $236 either way. If you still have the broken pieces, bring them. The chip data inside a cracked fob is often perfectly fine.
