Del Mar Heights, early morning, gym parking lot. A spin instructor walked out to her 1998 Audi A6 and the flip key pivot gave out. The blade snapped at the hinge point when she tried to fold it closed, and the broken blade end stayed stuck in the door lock cylinder. She had the fob shell in one hand and a blade stub in a lock cylinder in the other, and she had to be inside the studio in ten minutes.

I extracted the stuck blade from the cylinder, checked the lock for damage, and it was fine. Then I looked at the fob internals. The circuit board and the transponder chip were intact inside the cracked housing. That mattered a lot. Because her original electronics were readable and in good shape, I could transfer them into a new flip shell with a replacement blade cut to her vehicle, rebuild the fob, and have her back on the road without the heavier procedure.
Forty minutes from the broken blade in my hand to two working keys in hers. She went from zero to two, and the second one lives on her keyring now instead of a junk drawer at home.
The dealer was mentioned briefly, the way it always comes up. She had called them first. The quote made her pause long enough to find me instead. I did not ask what the number was. It does not change what the job costs with us.
