I got a call on a Saturday evening from a guy parked at a business complex off Scripps Poway Parkway in South Poway. He had his 2001 Audi A6 and one key. Except the flip blade had snapped off at the pivot, and the fob body with the transponder was sitting loose in his hand.
He said he tried to start the car anyway, holding the broken fob near the ignition and inserting just the blade stub. It did not work. Which makes sense. The transponder needs to be at the right position inside the column to be read, and a cracked housing can throw that off entirely.
I pulled up to the lot, looked at what he had, and confirmed the blade was done. The fob shell was cracked but the internals looked okay. We needed a new key cut to his car, a working fob assembled correctly, and the whole thing verified through the OBD port so the immobilizer would accept it.
Cut the blade on site, transferred what was salvageable, programmed the replacement through the diagnostic port. The C5 A6 does not require anything exotic for this. Right tool, right process, and you are through it in under an hour.

The broken pivot is one of the most common failure points on these older Audi flip keys. It is almost never the transponder. It is almost always the hinge.
