Downtown El Cajon on a weekday afternoon. A guy parked his 1999 A6 near the transit center, went about his day, and came back to nothing. Key gone. Not in his pocket, not on the ground nearby. Just gone. He had bought the car used a couple years back with one key and never made a spare. That is the call I get more than any other on older Audis.

I got there and started with the door lock cylinder. On these A6s from this generation, the lock cylinder holds all the information I need. I picked and decoded it to read the cut depths directly from the wafer positions inside. No original key needed. Once I had the cut data, I made the blade on site.
Then came the immobilizer side. These late-90s Audis store an immobilizer PIN that I read through the OBD port. With that PIN pulled, I ran the all-keys-lost sequence, which clears any previously registered keys from the system and registers the new one as the only valid key. That part matters. Any lost key someone else might find is dead after that step.
The flip key was cut, the transponder was programmed, the remote was synced, and I tested all of it before I packed up. His A6 started in the same parking spot he had been standing next to for the last hour.
He mentioned the dealer visit he had been mentally budgeting for. I told him what he owed me. He paused for a second. That pause happens on these jobs. He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer would have charged, and he did not need a tow.
