Cedros Design District on a Saturday has its own pace. The boutiques are open, there is foot traffic, and the parking lot off South Cedros Avenue fills up in a way it does not during the week. That is exactly where I was on a recent call for a 2015 Audi A6.
The owner had two fobs when he bought the car. One had stopped being recognized by the vehicle a few weeks earlier, and then the morning of my call, the second one started acting intermittent. He could start the car but the comfort access on the driver door handle had gone unreliable. He was not locked out, but he was nervous, and he was right to be nervous.
I pulled up, verified ownership, and started with the basics before going anywhere near the OBD port. Popped the battery cover on the fob that had gone fully dark. The CR2032 inside was the original, still reading voltage on the meter but low enough that the key was not communicating reliably. Swapped it. Nothing changed. That told me the fob had a deeper issue, not just a battery.
Connected my diagnostic equipment, accessed the immobilizer, read the security data, and registered a new fob to the vehicle. Cut the emergency blade to match the door and ignition. Then the part I do not skip: walked out to the far end of the parking lot, tested lock, unlock, and trunk from distance. Walked back, tested comfort access on both front handles, put the key in my pocket, approached the car from the front, and watched the handles react. Started the car three times consecutively with a pause between each.
He was watching from the sidewalk and when I came back the third time he just said, "you actually test all of it."
That is the job. Not hand over a key and drive away.
