A valid photo ID and proof of ownership -- registration or title works. I also verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker on your A6 before any work starts. That VIN confirmation is standard practice whether you go through a locksmith or a dealer. The difference is I do it on site in a couple of minutes instead of requiring you to produce a stack of documents before anyone will even look at the car.

My 2006 A6 starts and then immediately stalls. Could this be a key issue?

That symptom -- engine fires, then dies within a second or two -- is a known anti-theft behavior on vehicles from this era. The key may turn fine mechanically, but if the vehicle security system does not recognize an anti-theft element in the key, it cuts the engine almost immediately as a security response. It can feel like a fuel or ignition problem, and a lot of owners chase those parts first.

If your A6 is doing this, do not keep cranking it. Call me. I diagnose the anti-theft side of the problem on site and can tell you whether the issue is the key itself, the transponder element inside it, or something on the vehicle's immobilizer circuit. My key turns stiffly in the ignition. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Could be either, and the 2006 A6 has a known reputation for ignition cylinder wear. These cylinders see a lot of use over nearly two decades, and worn wafers inside the cylinder can make the key feel gritty, sticky, or like it takes extra force to turn.

First thing to check: try the key in the door lock. If it turns smoothly there but binds in the ignition, the cylinder is the more likely culprit, not the key. If it binds in both places, the key blade may have worn out of spec and a freshly cut replacement might solve it. Either way, forcing it risks snapping the blade inside the cylinder, which turns a stiff-key call into a much longer extraction job. Worth getting it looked at before it gets to that point.
