Out in Fairbanks Ranch, just off the quieter stretch of road that runs through that part of Rancho Santa Fe, I got a call from a guy who drove for a rideshare platform. He had pulled over and was standing next to his 2004 Audi A6 when I arrived.

The key blade had snapped inside the door lock. Not bent, not jammed - clean break, right near the tip. He told me he had been using a worn copy for a while and that morning the lock felt stiff, he gave it a little extra pressure, and that was it. The wafer surfaces inside these locks are easy to damage if you force it, but if you work with the tool correctly you can ease the fragment out without touching the wafers. It came out clean.

Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position to get the exact cut depths. Then I cut a fresh blade to match and rebuilt the flip key into a new shell using the original transponder chip, which had survived the break completely intact since it lives in the key head, not the blade.

The door opened. The key started the car. He drove off to his next pickup.

The other locksmith's quote would have meant a tow, a dealer or shop visit, a new cylinder, and a wait. None of that was necessary. Destructive entry is always the last resort, not the first suggestion.
