My key blade snapped off inside the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction on the 2008 A6 ignition cylinder is a job we handle on site. The C6 A6 uses a traditional keyed ignition cylinder, so the blade goes all the way in and can shear if the key housing is cracked and the blade gets twisted under load.

Extraction without damaging the cylinder is possible in most cases using the right picks and extractors. Once the broken piece is out, we inspect the cylinder to make sure nothing shifted inside. Then we cut a replacement blade to your vehicle and, if needed, program a new flip key. Trying to dig a broken blade out with a screwdriver or needle-nose pliers usually makes it worse and can score the wafers, so call before you try that.

What exactly is a remote flip key and what does it do?

It is two things in one housing. The flip blade folds into the body of the fob when you are not using it and snaps out when you press the release button. That blade goes into the ignition cylinder to start the car.

Inside the housing is a transponder chip that communicates with the immobilizer when the key is in the ignition. If the chip is not recognized, the car will not start regardless of whether the blade turns the cylinder. The 4-button remote on the outside handles lock, unlock, and the other functions over radio frequency.

The 2008 A6 uses this setup, so replacing the key means both cutting the blade correctly to your vehicle and programming the chip and remote. One without the other and the key is only half functional.

My Audi is showing a key-not-detected warning. What do I do first?

Start with the CR2032. A low battery on these fobs will kill remote range and can also affect how reliably the car reads the transponder signal.

If swapping the battery does not clear it, try this: hold the fob body directly against the ignition cylinder collar and turn. The cylinder has an induction coil that can power the transponder chip directly even when the fob battery is completely dead. If the car starts that way, you confirmed the chip is still good and it was a battery issue.

If neither of those works, the fault is somewhere else. It could be the key itself, it could be the immobilizer antenna ring around the cylinder, or it could be a communication issue between modules after a battery disconnect or a module reset. That last one shows up on C6 A6 forums more than people expect -- owners do a battery change and suddenly have a key recognition problem that was never there before. We can diagnose on site and tell you whether the fault is in the key or in the car.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself?

Not on this vehicle. The 2008 A6 does not have a DIY add-a-key sequence you can do through the ignition or a button combination. Programming the transponder chip to the immobilizer and pairing the remote both require diagnostic equipment. If you bought a fob online, bring it along -- as long as it is the correct part for this vehicle, we can program it on site and cut the blade to your car. You will save on the hardware cost that way.

The remote buttons stopped working but the key still starts the car. Is the fob dead?

Not necessarily. On the C6 A6, the transponder chip and the remote transmitter are separate functions sharing the same housing. It is common for the remote side to fail while the chip keeps working fine -- meaning the car starts, but lock and unlock are gone.

First suspect is still the CR2032. A battery that is low enough will drop the remote signal before it affects the transponder read. Try a fresh battery and reseat it firmly against the contacts.

If a new battery does not bring the remote back, the issue is likely the circuit board inside the fob, a cracked antenna trace from housing flex, or a worn button pad that is no longer making contact. We can open the fob, check the board, and either repair the housing or transfer the working components into a new shell. If the board itself is gone, a replacement fob gets programmed on site.
