She was at the outdoor shops in RB Town Center in Rancho Bernardo when someone grabbed her bag off the stroller handle. Car keys, wallet, phone, all of it gone at once. She borrowed a phone from a store employee and called her husband first, then the police, then me.
Her 2003 Audi A6 was sitting at home in the garage and she had no way to get to it, let alone into it. Her husband called the dealer while she waited. They said the car would need to be towed in, they would have to order the key, and it would be three to five business days. They also recommended wiping the immobilizer memory since the stolen key could still start the car. The combined estimate was well over seven hundred dollars, and that was before towing.

I cleared the key data from the immobilizer, enrolled two new fobs, programmed the remote functions, decoded the lock cylinder, and cut both blades on site.
Both keys were working before the police officer finished taking her report. She drove home that night with her baby in the back seat. The stolen key does nothing to that car now.
The dealer estimate was a reference point, not a competition. She saved a good chunk and didn't wait a week. That part almost felt beside the point given everything else she had been through that evening.
