My key broke off in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, broken key extraction is a standard job. I carry the tools to pull a broken blade from the cylinder without damaging it. Once it's out, I can cut a new key from the lock data on site and handle the transponder enrollment so you're driving the same day.

One thing worth knowing on these older Intrepids: the key head and blade are separate components, and the plastic housing can crack with age. If the blade snapped but the key head with the chip is still intact, I can sometimes use the chip from the old head and save you the cost of a full new key setup. Depends on the condition of the chip, but it's worth checking before writing it off.

Question 2

What is a transponder key and why does my 1998 Intrepid need one?

A transponder key has two jobs. The blade turns the ignition mechanically, same as any key. But inside the plastic head there's a small chip that sends a signal to the immobilizer when you turn the key. If the system doesn't get the right signal back, the engine either won't start or cranks and immediately shuts off.

Dodge introduced this on the Intrepid in the mid-to-late 1990s as theft deterrent. A copied blade alone won't start the car. The chip has to be there and recognized. That's why a hardware store copy works in the door lock but fails at the ignition. If someone has done that to you already, that's likely your issue right there.

Question 3

My Intrepid cranks but stalls right out. Could this be a key problem?

That's actually one of the clearest signs the immobilizer is involved. When the engine catches and immediately dies rather than not cranking at all, the immobilizer recognized enough to allow cranking but cut the fuel authorization before it could run. It's a consistent pattern on these vehicles.

First thing to try: if you have a second programmed key, use it. If the second key starts the car normally, the chip in your primary key has failed or worn out. If neither key works, the issue may be on the vehicle side, either the receiver that reads the chip or the immobilizer module itself. That's something I diagnose on site. Don't let anyone replace the ignition cylinder before ruling out the chip first.

I bought a replacement key online. Will it work, or does it still need programming?

Accepted Answer

It still needs programming. A blank transponder key for the 1998 Intrepid has an unprogrammed chip inside. Cutting the blade gets you into the ignition mechanically. But until the chip is enrolled to that specific vehicle, the car won't run.

If you already have at least one working key for this car, there's an onboard procedure that can add the new key without external equipment. Lose all your keys, and it takes a tool with the right software to get back in. Either way, the key you bought online isn't plug-and-play.

Question 5

How many keys can the 1998 Intrepid hold in memory, and does adding a new one erase the old ones?

The system on this generation can hold multiple programmed keys. Adding a new key through the onboard procedure does not wipe the existing ones, so your current working key stays functional.

The all-keys-lost situation is the exception. When there are no working keys at all and programming has to be done from scratch, all previous key data gets cleared as part of the process. That's expected and normal. It's also why I test every key, old and new, after any programming job before I pack up.
