2004 Dodge Intrepid Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Buena Creek, I got a call from a guy who'd been at a trailhead lot off the edge of Vista for a couple hours already. He'd unloaded his quad, hit the trail, and somewhere on the way back realized his key was gone.
Probably bounced out of his pocket. His 2004 Dodge Intrepid was sitting in the dirt lot, locked, no spare, and the nearest Dodge dealer was over an hour out.
He'd called another locksmith before me. That locksmith told him the ignition cylinder would likely need to be drilled to get the car open, and then replaced to get it running. The estimate was steep enough that he called around for a second opinion.
I drove out to Buena Creek, decoded the door lock mechanically without removing anything or damaging a single wafer. Read the cut depths right out of the lock. From there I cut a new key blade to match, then programmed the transponder chip to the vehicle through the OBD port. All-keys-lost on these takes a few extra minutes because you're starting from zero, but it's a clean process when you have the right equipment.
The lock looked exactly the same when I left as it did when I got there. No drilling, no cylinder swap, nothing replaced. He paid a fraction of what the other locksmith quoted, and the car started on the first turn.
The dealer comparison was an afterthought for him. He was just glad someone showed up and actually fixed it.
