I was parked off the Las Americas Area side of San Ysidro when this one came in. A guy had driven his 2000 Dodge Intrepid to a hardware store, got a key cut, and handed the locksmith at the counter a spare to copy. Looked right, turned smooth, and then the car started and died. Every time. He tried it four or five times in the parking lot before he gave up and called me.
When I pulled up, he was leaning against the trunk watching traffic go by on the boulevard. He had the hardware store key in his hand and the original in his pocket, and he genuinely could not figure out why a key that turned the lock could refuse to run the car.
I explained that the cut is only half the job on this vehicle. The transponder chip inside the key head is the other half, and the immobilizer will not let the engine stay alive without it being registered. The hardware store key had no chip at all. It was just metal.
I pulled out a proper replacement key blank with the right transponder chip, cut it to match his lock, and programmed it through the OBD port on site. First start, the car ran clean. He held both keys up next to each other, looked them over, and said they looked completely identical from the outside. That's the whole problem with these. You can't tell by looking.
The dealer would have taken a day and charged him a lot more for the same result. I was done in under an hour, right there in the neighborhood, and he drove off with a key that actually worked.
