I got a call from a woman parked in Bressi Ranch, Carlsbad, around dusk on a Tuesday. She had come out of a shop off of Palomar Airport Road, hit the unlock button walking through the parking lot, and nothing happened. She assumed dead battery in the fob. Swapped it in the car with a spare CR2032 she had in her glovebox. Still nothing on the remote. But the car started fine when she flipped the blade and turned the ignition.

The housing had a hairline crack running through the hinge, and when I popped the shell, the battery contact tab had bent just enough to lose consistent connection. The new CR2032 she had put in was fine. The contact was not. I reshaped the tab, seated the battery correctly, snapped it back together, and walked through all five buttons with her standing there.
Everything worked.
She had already called the dealer that afternoon and was quoted a wait plus a replacement key at a price that made her pause. This took about fifteen minutes in the parking lot and cost her a fraction of what they wanted.
The car started fine the whole time because the transponder in the blade never cared about the battery. That is the part most people don't know, and it is the part that changes how you diagnose the problem.
