I got a call from a woman in the Lomas Santa Fe area of Solana Beach on a Tuesday morning. She had just landed from an overnight flight, made it to her car in the long-term lot, and the Terrain would not acknowledge the fob at all. No response at the door handles, nothing on the push button. The car just sat there.
She had already figured out the fob battery was dead, but she didn't know about the emergency blade inside the fob. So the car was locked, her luggage was on the asphalt, and she was running on no sleep.
She called the dealer first. They told her she'd need to bring it in, and the earliest they could get to it was two days out. She called a tow company next. Then she called me.
I walked her through pulling the emergency blade out of the fob over the phone so she could get into the car and sit down while she waited. By the time I got there she was in the driver seat, more comfortable, a little less frantic.
The fix itself was quick. Swapped the CR2032, reseated it properly so both contacts were making clean connection, and confirmed both of her fobs were still enrolled to the vehicle through my scan tool. Nothing needed to be reprogrammed. The fobs had never lost their pairing. It was just a dead battery cutting off the RF signal and the passive entry wake-up.
She drove home before noon. Paid a fraction of what the tow plus the dealer visit would have run, and did not lose two days waiting. She texted later to say she'd already ordered a spare CR2032 to keep in her glovebox.
