Out in Alpine, near the Harbison Canyon stretch, I got a call from a mechanic on his lunch break. He was parked at an auto parts store and his 2014 GMC Terrain had a key that had stopped communicating with the vehicle.
Not a dead battery situation. The car just would not respond to the fob at all, and he had already ruled out the obvious stuff. He knew what he was looking at.
He had called the GMC dealer before he called me. Three-day wait, drop the car off, no loaner offered. He fixes vehicles for a living and he had a full afternoon of work booked. Leaving the Terrain at a dealer lot for three days was not an option he was willing to sit with.
I pulled into the lot while he was still on his break. Plugged into the OBD port, accessed the GM key learning menu, and started the security access sequence. There is a timed countdown that GM built into the immobilizer enrollment process as a theft deterrent. I have sat through it dozens of times. There is nothing to do but wait it out. Once it cleared, I registered the flip key and confirmed the remote functions.
From plug-in to him driving away, the whole thing was about twenty minutes. He was back at the shop before his break was over.
He laughed a little when I packed up. Said he has a good scan tool in the shop but never needed an immobilizer programmer until now. That is the job in one line. It is a specialty, not a general repair.
